AAO Recognized for Contributions to Profession

On Saturday, July 21, the AAO was one of four recipients of the American Osteopathic Association’s 2019 STARs (Strategic Team Award and Recognition) for its dedication to advancing osteopathic medicine. The STARs recognize contributions made by state, specialty and regional affiliates, colleges of osteopathic medicine, osteopathic postdoctoral training institutions (OPTIs), and nonpractice affiliates that have advanced the osteopathic profession. The award honors programs and activities that align with the initiatives in the AOA’s strategic plan. Read more →

AAO Response Regarding Larry Nassar

Osteopathic physicians are trained to utilize osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) in the care of their patients. OMT offers an effective and nonpharmacologic option to treat a wide range of conditions, from common musculoskeletal disorders, such as low back and neck pain, to improving outcomes for elderly hospitalized patients admitted for pneumonia. AAO life member Robert E. Kappler, DO, FAAODist, of River Grove, Illinois, died Oct. 18. Dr. Kappler was the 1980-81 president of the Academy, and he was a recipient of the AAO’s Andrew Taylor Still Medallion of Honor and the FAAO’s Distinguished Service Award. Read more →

VA Grants Full Practice Rights to APRNs

The US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) published a final rule this week that will provide certain advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) with full practice authority within VA facilities. The rule pre-empts state scope of practice laws regulating medical care for services provided as part of an individual’s scope of employment within the VA system. The proposed rule would have allowed full independent practice for certified registered nurse anesthetists; they were removed from the final rule and their practice will remain under physician oversight. AAO component societies and all osteopathic-approved residency programs are invited to submit nominations for the Academy’s 2017 Resident of the Year award. All members of the Postgraduate American Academy of Osteopathy are eligible for the award, as are residents who graduated in 2016. If you know a worthy resident, contact his or her program director.
