David Coffey, DO, FAAO, Elected as Trustee of American Academy of Osteopathy

Little Rock, Arkansas, March 27, 2009 – David Coffey, DO, FAAO has assumed the office of Trustee of the American Academy of Osteopathy (AAO).
 
Dr. Coffey is in private practice in Montgomery, Alabama.  From 1995 to 2004 he was affiliated with Baptist Medical Center South and is currently affiliated with Jackson Hospital and Noland Hospital of Montgomery. Dr. Coffey currently serves on the Medical Executive Committee and is Credentials Committee Chair at Noland Hospital.  He also serves as the Medical Director of Wiregrass Hospice of Montgomery. He is board certified in Family Practice, Neuromuscular Medicine, and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, and has earned a certificate of Competency from The Cranial Academy. He also holds the Honorary Degree of Fellow of the American Academy of Emergency Physicians (FAAEP) and held board certification in E. M. from 1992-2002. In March, 2004 he became a Fellow of the American Academy of Osteopathy and has served on the Fellowship and External Fund Raising Committees.  He is a Director on the Cranial Academy Foundation Board and received the Honorary Degree of Fellow of the Cranial Academy in June, 2008.  He also serves as an OMM evaluator for the National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners.

Dr. Coffey is a 1984 graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM) in Philadelphia, PA. He completed a rotating internship at Metropolitan Hospital, Parkview Division, in 1985 and served as Chief Intern. Until 1992, he was in teaching service at both Metropolitan Hospital and the PCOM hospital while maintaining a private practice. At PCOM, Dr. Coffey served as an Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine and as a member of the Admissions Committee. He also served as President of the Pennsylvania Academy of Osteopathy from 1988 to 1992.  During this time he was a team physician, kicking coach, wrestling coach and President of the Philadelphia Wrestling Association. He is, in fact, the founder of the Sport of Scholastic Wrestling in the Philadelphia Catholic League. Since 1983, he has helped provide awards to Philadelphia Public and Catholic League wrestlers for service, dedication and leadership. On May 5, 1977, Dr. Coffey received the United States Wrestling Federation Urban Achievement Award for distinguished service to urban youth in activating varsity wrestling teams in 8 Catholic and 11 Public High Schools of Urban Philadelphia.
 
From 1985-1995, he also worked as an emergency room physician, including 3 years as a physician contractor with Alabama Emergency Room Administrative Services, and served as an ACLS Instructor/Provider after relocating to Montgomery. His heightened interest in the cranial field has motivated his active involvement with The Cranial Academy, serving on their Board of Directors, as Vice President, and then as President from 1999-2001. Dr. Coffey’s paper, “C1 Somatic Dysfunction and Unilateral Retro-orbital Cephalgia” was published in the June 2005 edition of the AAO Journal. 
 
Dr. Coffey has worked steadily as a humanitarian in providing medical relief to Bosnia-Hercegovina, Croatia, Siberia and the Sudan. His credits are numerous in transporting medical supplies, establishing hospital facilities and supplying medical equipment. In February 2000, he directed  an investigative and operational medical relief effort in Kauda, Sudan, following the bombing of a Church School, caring for survivors and the destruction of the tragic event in which 19 first and second grade children and their teacher were killed. In January of 2003 Dr. Coffey began service as the southeastern representative to the PCOM Alumni Board of Directors. In March of 2003, Dr. Coffey was appointed to the Board of Directors of the “Bishop Gassis Sudan Relief Fund” and became treasurer in November 2003. In April of 2003 he was inducted by the Vatican as a Papal Knight of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre.
 
Dr. Coffey is a member of the American Osteopathic Association, the American Academy of Osteopathy, Alabama Osteopathic Medical Association, Medical Association of the State of Alabama, Montgomery Medical Society, American College of Osteopathic Family Practitioners, Pennsylvania Osteopathic Medical Association and The Cranial Academy. Dr. Coffey will represent the Alabama Osteopathic Medical Association as their State Delegate at the AOA delegates meeting in July, 2009.
