Postgraduate American Academy of Osteopathy

The Postgraduate American Academy of Osteopathy (PAAO) is a membership section of the American Academy of Osteopathy (AAO) developed to serve osteopathic physicians in postgraduate training. Currently, three of the PAAO committee members serve on the American Osteopathic Association's OMT Task Force which is charged with analyzing the quality of OMT Training in postgraduate programs and proposing measures to improve OMT Training in all programs. Members also serve on the AAO's C-NMM/OMM committee (charged with developing the brand of NMM/OMM and dealing with board certification issues), the Informational Technologies committee (charged with developing and maintaining technologies to aid in the promotion of the Academy and the profession at large), the Lousia Burns Osteopathic Research Committee (charged with directing and facilitating research into osteopathic principles), the Membership Committee (charged with fostering membership and retention and maintaining membership data), and the OPTI Committee (working in conjunction with the Education committee to assure proper educational opportunities for intern and resident OPTI members).

What are the goals of the PAAO?

  • Promote utilization and continued education of osteopathic principles and practice (OPP) in postgraduate training programs
  • Provide a network for interns and residents interested in OPP
  • Identify interns and residents at the annual AAO Convocation
  • Provide a platform for interns' and residents' issues at the AAO
  • Provide AAO representation for interns and residents at the AOA level
