Residency Training

Updated November 22, 2009

The American Osteopathic Association's Council on Postdoctoral Training currently authorizes residency training in the recognized specialty of neuromusculoskeletal medicine and osteopathic manipulative medicine (NMM/OMM).

Specialty training programs consist of three types, all of which qualify the successful resident to sit for specialty board examination in Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine:

  • Integrated three year program in Osteopathic Family Practice/Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (FP/NMM)
  • Two-year program in Neuromusculoskeletal medicine/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (NMM/OMM)
  • One-year program in Neuromusculoskeletal medicine/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine following completion of an AOA approved residency in another discipline (PLUS-ONE)

Recently the AOA has restructured the internship program, and the following articles provide important information regarding these changes as they pertain to the NMM/OMM residencies noted above:

Additionally, the AOA has provided a "Fast Links" page on their website to help you quickly find AOA postdoctoral related information, including AOA Basic Documents for internship, residency training programs and the OPTI, specialty specific standards, new changes to all basic standards documents, AOA postgraduate match information, links to all OPTIs, a link to ERAS, and so forth.
