The American Academy of Osteopathy (AAO) is the Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine/Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (NMM/OMM) specialty college and all of those dedicated to the practice of manual medicine.

The AAO is the leading organization in providing NMM/OMM specialty credits in the U.S.

  • OMM is the art and application of the osteopathic philosophy to the somatic system.
  • NMM is the scientific basis and study by which the osteopathic philosophy is understood and applied.

As a specialty college, the AAO provides quality NMM/OMM continuing medical education (CME) courses, advocates at the national and specialty college levels on issues impacting its members, and strives towards fulfilment of its mission and vision.

The mission of the American Academy of Osteopathy is to teach, advocate and research the science, art and philosophy of osteopathic medicine, emphasizing the integration of osteopathic principles, practice and manipulative treatment in patient care.

In March 2015, the AAO’s Board of Governors adopted the following vision statement:

All patients are aware of and have access to osteopathic medical care and osteopathic manipulative medicine for optimal health.

CME By The Numbers: 150 Average Annual CME Course Hours Offered; 25+ Average Course Director Years of Experience; 40+ On-Demand CME Hours To Date

All health care professionals and students are invited to attend AAO CME courses. Some courses require prerequisites and may not be appropriate for osteopathic medicine beginners.

Learn more about future AAO CME courses, watch past courses on-demand, or get an overview of NMM courses that are right for your expertise on our CME Opportunities page.
